Mobile Blogging

December 8th, 2008

Blogging is a great thing. And with the increase in mobile device use, faster wireless network speeds, and new technologies in recent times, it makes sense that blogging has moved to the mobile scene. When I started “moblogging” I was simply using email on my phone to compose a post, email it to my blog, and have it show up on the site that way. When I got an internet-enabled iPod Touch I used the same technique.

This was simply because the blogging interface used by WordPress does not display or function correctly in Windows Mobile’s IE or the iPod Touch’s Safari browser, respectively. However, with the wonderfully expandable WordPress system, three plugins will make your blog “mobile ready” for all the major web devices out there.

Administration (Back-end)

  • WPhone - Creates a “Use mobile admin interface” checkbox when logging in through a mobile phone or iPod Touch/iPhone. Solves all your mobile blog-managing problems, although a bit glitchy on the Touch’s browser when editing large articles. However, this will remedy your managing needs for everything the less-featured iPhone app doesn’t cover.

Display (Front-end)

  • WordPress Mobile plugin - Allows your blog to easily (and attractively) display on mobile devices, such as the aforementioned Pocket IE. The only downside to this plugin is the more commercial nature of it that requires you to pay to have ads removed. If you don’t mind a little text-ad or have limited mobile visitors, this will do the trick.
  • WPtouch - Creates a great interface for iPod Touch/iPhone users. If you download one of these plugins, this should be the one you use. The interface is incredible, allows a good amount of customization (including your own icons), and works great on the Touch/iPhone’s browser–portrait or landscape.

To really see what these all do, try them out on your own blog or view this site on a mobile device: all three plugins are currently used. This should give you a good idea of the good these plugins can do for your blog.

New Direction

December 1st, 2008

The winds have shifted once again. I’ve decided to move “Late Night Fiction” (just the name) to a blog on a different domain where it can concentrate on the many various things I write about, like projects I’m working on and such–basically half of the other arbitrary things I write about here. This site (blog.chicken-cheese.com) will stay as it is, probably with a new name, and just posts about the internet, web development, and things along those lines (my expertise) as the main focus.

This was my first official blog and, as such, it was a bit more difficult to pick a focus and stick with it. So splitting between where I want this blog to go and the rest of what I’ve written should take us in the right direction. I am open to suggestions about a possible name or even if you think the split will be good, as this is for you, the reader.

AJAX-ified

August 25th, 2008

Okay, now I’m satisfied. The new K2 theme will work justt fine. And, as the title notes, it has AJAX which is just a fancy way of saying you can submit information such as comments and searches and get results without the page reloading (save some time).

I’m gonna make some more categories too. Enjoy!

One Year!

August 9th, 2008

It was one year and a day ago that I officially started this blog. Of course, at the time it was under a different name and was a bit more philisophical than the now-FlashStuf-and-web-development-randomness that Late Night Fiction has turned into. And I just realized that today, so there it is.

Fancy

August 9th, 2008

And so it is done– the new self-hosted Late Night Fiction! It was a bit more of a pain than simply exporting and importing; I had to save each image that I’ve posted (luckily there weren’t many) and then upload them all to the server (since I didn’t have access to my files). Also, users got erased, as I didn’t have access to my database either since this was previously a “1&1 Blog” installation.

Otherwise, we made it unscathed and I’m in the process of adding tags to all the posts and adding the cool widgets and such. It looks like the tags will be phasing out a few categories as well.

Setting up one more blog

August 7th, 2008

I set up the FlashStuf Blog today, getting it customized and such, when I realized how much better it is than this one. See, they both use WordPress, but this blog is my host’s, 1&1, version of a blog. It came with a simple setup and plainly I didn’t think I’d actually use the thing, so I thought it’d be no big deal. But I just installed WordPress myself for FlashStuf’s blog and I saw all the customization I suddenly had not only in the theme and plugin departments, but just an overall control over the actual code that goes on in the backend. Once I play around with it some more, I’ll be moving this blog into my own installation because by-golly, that is what you (and I) deserve– fanciness.

Blog: Take Two

July 3rd, 2008

I’ve created another blog, called life according to matt, that I’ll be doing on the side of this one. Really, for when I want to be a little more informal and let out my thoughts on things. Otherwise you can count on Late Night Fiction to keep chugging away with more of the.. other crap I ramble on about.

New look

It’s plain, and WordPress default, but I think the scheme better fits the title of this site. I can also write more in this now, I’m finding. Lots of time on the hands.

Windows Live Writer?

September 11th, 2007

So I’m trying this thing out. This Writer business. Pardon me, since I’m new to all this blogging business. But I’m just now beginning to see how far this has all gone, how it’s the big thing now. But I guess this little thing gives an extra fancy look to everything. And makes it easier to spice up the blog entries. Which would make this more into a real kind of website, now wouldn’t it? Ooh, it even spell checks (”website” -not a word?).

So anyone curious out there, I’d definitely recommend (thank you spell-check) this little piece of software for any bloggers, much like myself. Fancy.

There is something extremely satisfying about being able to click a button in my browser, see this attractive (yet simple) interface of this thing they call WordPress, and be able to type whatever I want to have published instantly to the world. It gives me this feeling that I don’t believe they have a word for, or at least none that I know of.

I think this is why I find developing web applications so satisfying. Not only is it the future, it’s a completely new step forward. You can access it from anywhere and never have to worry about installations on the user-side, and it is directly hooked up to that wonderful thing we call the Internet. And the possibilities with something with that kind of hookup are basically infinite. Which means it’s going to take a long time before developing for this internet becomes boring.

So I just wanted to take advantage of this incredibly-made little piece of web application to let you know how great it all is.
